Stanwix Sheltered Housing, Thurles, Co. Tipperary

Stanwix Sheltered Housing Development at Kickham Street, Thurles, Co. Tipperary (16 Units) for Thurles Lions Trust Housing Association

Constructed on the site of the original Stanwix Home, it involved the complete refurbishment of the former Stanwix Home (Widow’s Home), a protected structure, in addition to the construction of 6 new houses. The development also has a Community Centre.

The primary factor influencing the design of this development, was the retention and reuse of the existing protected Alms Houses (single storey) constructed in the late 19th Century. The dwellings were converted into 9 apartments and retained the Main Directors House (2-storey) as a Consulting space for use by the wider community.

The design also included a new Terrace of 5 units and an Assisted Living Care building with 5 bedrooms. All buildings are ranged around a central green open space with direct access to Kickham St. By reusing the existing buildings, the Site and Protected Structures remain an integral part of Thurles Town’s rich urban fabric. The design was careful to retain the character of the existing buildings but to embrace a sense of revival for the dis-used buildings, which have been an important feature in this part of the town for 130 years.
